Where there is smoke there is a fire. For several days, extensive wild fires have be raging on the volcano as in hundreds of other locations throughout Italy. The volcano last erupted in 1944. In comparison to some of the nighttime images of the current fires which show little smoke, some of the images reveal a disproportional amount of white smoke for localized forest fires, they are rather reminiscent of volcanic ash eruptions.
